About us
The UTS fish ecology lab aims to provide the innovative research needed to inform the sustainability of the oceans and their fish populations while learning more of the fascinating life histories of fishes on coral reefs, coasts, deep sea and estuaries. We engage in public debate on a wide range of ocean issues and are a hub for student research training.
Featured Project
Restoring fish life to Sydney Opera House
Since 2018, UTS Fish Ecology lab is partnering with Sydney Opera House to survey fish life around the Opera House, and add small habitat units designed to enhance fish life. Regular surveys have revealed a mosaic of marine life including octopuses, small reef fishes and larger species such as bream, leatherjacket and luderick. The small reefs installed in May 2019 we added are attracting several new species, and as they encrust with algae and sponges their habitat value will increase.
